Apple River Fort
In the spring of 1995, the Apple River Fort Historic Foundation set out to locate the Apple River Fort, which had been torn down in 1847, fifteen years after settlers fended off an attack by Black Hawk during the Black Hawk War. Local lore said the fort was located on a hillside not far from Main St. in Elizabeth. Archeological excavations soon revealed musket balls, dishes, a small cellar and trash pit, and more importantly the Fort’s original footprint, a 50 X 70 foot area. Rebuilding the Fort’s cabin and walls begin in 1996 with volunteers using the same tools and materials used by the original settlers. Because of it’s rich archeological remains and historical significance, the Apple River Fort site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today the Fort comes to life through living history programs, tours, and special events. Historical site and interprative center currently closed due to state budget cuts. 311 E.
